In this vase the artist managed to create a beautiful synthesis of art and nature. Just as so many other designs from Harjes, also this one plays with nture’s forms. The vase seems to simply grow together from branches, blades of grass or stalks – looking almost tropically rampant – dense while at the same time showing an ironical game of form and function. Is it not a vase’s task to keep plants and stalks together, instead of being made of them?
Thanks to the treatment of the material, the form’s artistic symmetry does not appear too austere: the vase’s furrowed coarse and smooth surface structures gain a skillful softness through the bronze’s sandcasting.The weight of the bronze makes the vase unusually useful – despite its slender base: even compositions of branches are being held securely.
